Well… we finally did it. After a lot of planning, testing ideas, making sawdust, and probably spending way too much time staring at pieces of wood trying to decide if they needed “just one more coat,” the Rainy River Homestead store is officially up and running.
This whole thing started because I genuinely enjoy making things. Not factory-made stuff. Not mass-produced “click a button and 10,000 appear” products. Real handmade pieces that start as raw wood in the shop and slowly turn into something unique.
If you’ve followed my projects over on Rainy River Homesteaders, you already know I’ve been building and experimenting with all kinds of things for a long time now — layered mandalas, lake maps, signs, puzzles, engraving projects, custom pieces, and plenty of ideas that probably sounded good at 2 AM while standing in the shop with a coffee.
A lot of the stuff you’ll see here starts with Baltic birch plywood, wood dyes, sanding, engraving, layering, more sanding, clear coat, and then finally standing back and hoping I didn’t miss a glue spot somewhere. Every piece takes time. Some projects end up being six, seven, or even eight layers deep. Some take multiple attempts before I’m happy with them. That’s just part of the process.
One thing that’s really important to me is that these pieces actually look and feel like real wood. I don’t want everything covered in thick paint that hides the grain. I like the natural look of wood showing through the dyes and finishes. Every board has different grain patterns, different character, and sometimes its own personality too… especially the warped ones that decide they want to fight me the entire time.
Right now, we’re still building the store and adding new products constantly. Some items are already available, while others are still somewhere between “great idea” and “currently covered in sawdust on the workbench.” As we get everything organized, you’ll keep seeing new listings, new custom options, and completely new product ideas showing up.
Customization is also a huge part of what we do here. A lot of pieces can be personalized with names, locations, engraving changes, colour changes, custom text, or other adjustments. Honestly, I enjoy making custom projects because it means people end up with something that actually feels personal instead of something identical to everyone else’s.
And this whole thing didn’t happen overnight.
Rainy River Homestead grew slowly through blogging, woodworking, experimenting, learning, failing, rebuilding things, redesigning things, and figuring everything out one step at a time. Between the blog, the shop projects, laser engraving, photography, and trying to learn the business side of all this, it’s definitely been a process. But it’s also been a lot of fun.
If you’re interested in homesteading, woodworking, foraging, country living, recipes, projects, or just following along while I try new ideas, definitely check out the blog over at rainyriverhomesteaders.com. There’s a little bit of everything over there.
And finally — thanks for stopping by the store.
Whether you’re here to browse, order something custom, or just see what I’ve been working on lately, I appreciate it. Supporting small handmade businesses really does make a difference.
We’re just getting started.
